MEMORY
OLD THEATER REMADE BOOKSTORE
The intention of the client is to rebuild and transform an old theater in a bookstore. The only remains: the structure and a stone pig’s killing table.
We want to use the memory of the place and create a new polyfunctional pavilion where performances and the act of reading coexist together. The first decision was to preserve the wooden structure and add a new slab proving with 2 floors. The pig´s table as main actor, as a mystery stone, and 3 stands placed in each side framing it. 3 objects that modify the use of the space offering a sit for reading, having a coffee or looking at any performance in the same time that the backside of each bench is a shelf for books.
The reception/bar and stairs are secondary objects placed in both sides of the building. A second floor will offer tables and chairs for study with more privacy.
Due the bad conservation stage of the roof we will replace it with new materials and add 5 sky windows. 5 white volumes that introduce a diffuse sunlight. The façade will be replaced and re design following the technics of the traditional construction but with a difference of scale and mobility. 2 big boards can be opened to expand the inner space to the street, visually and functionally for a possible performance watched from the street like in old times.
