"CATALAN VAULT" / LIGHTER - LESS MATERIAL - BIGGER DISTANCE

 

With less than 10cm thickness we cover 7m.  Is a type of low brickwork arch forming a vaulted ceiling. It is constructed by laying a first layer of light bricks lengthwise "in space", without centering nor framework, and has a much gentler curve than most other methods of construction. It works like a shell, 3 layers of thin bricks (2.5cm) and mortar 1cm in between. Brick layers should be place always in opposed directions.

 

MATERIAL 

ALL CLAY / STRUCTURE + WALLS +  ROOF + FLOORING

All clay. We decided to use Bricks for the whole school. A cheap local material highly performed and with a lot of possibilities. The idea is to simplify the construction and low the budget without giving up a comfort-high end spaces.  It s a simple element that everyone understand. Different sizes will be used for different purposes.

 

SUSTANABILITY

WATER TANK PERIMETER

We tried to cover as much surface of  plot as possible with the aim to capture and control the rain water flow. The vaults collect the rain water and pouting in it in a longitudinal tanks where is kept avoiding sun, mosquitos, dust and leafs. Avoiding pumping water systems, through gravity the tank will supply with clean water to the kitchen, latrines, orchard and corral.

 

PROGRAM

"EXTRA OUTDOOR CLASS " / CANTINE - LIBRARY - PLAYGROUND

The courtyard is the heart of the school. All the classes are facing the patio. The entrance of the school is through this outdoor space for easy control and management of the children. This core connects the space in shadow under the tree, the library,  and the cantine in one polifuntional space
