Capsule city is a reflection of how chinese cities are expanding so fast according to the needs of the big developers with one aim on mind, make more money. The competition brief was looking for a new image of housing complex to be copied and reproduce all along china, only one condition: 2types of apartments (18m2/36m2). We are in Chengdu in the "old town" from 60´development, inside the 2ring. If you see the city from above is a carpet of small rectangules, the same. Due a ownership policy in China, all the ground belong to the goverment and just can be rent for bussines during 70 years. Buildings are not repair and just they wait to be demolish.

We want to give a second life. We believe besides the lack of maintance and higenic of this buildings, the social frame establish and developed for so many years is priceless, deseve to be preserve. 90% of the inhabitants are retired people while young people are moving to putsite of cities, newer districts but more expensive and hard to keep. We propose the capsule city, a new layer of streets and public space is growing on a different level on the roof of the old complex. Big developers no need to invest on the land, the investement will be used for remaking and reforming the old and the new. The capsule is a minimun vital space (possible to combine) that let young people share life and space with the old in the center of the cities during the hardest time of the begining of working life.
